The Valles Caldera Trust, for the first time since establishment, will offer the public an opportunity to fish on the six and one half miles of the East Fork of the Jemez River, along with the lower end of the Jaramillo Creek. The program is designed to offer ten (10) anglers access to these rivers, on the Valle Grande, for the day. This opportunity will be made available mainly through a reservation system on a first come, first served basis. In the case that all ten slots were not reserved, the open number of available slots will be offered at the Valle Grande Staging area on a first come, first served basis or by lottery at the staging area if there are more anglers than available slots.

This program will accommodate both those who plan ahead, as well as those who drop in. Of the ten available slots, four will be reserved for Valles Caldera National Preserve registered fishing guides. Guides will pay a higher rod fee for their clients, pay an annual fee, provide liability insurance naming the Trust as additional insured, along with meeting other additional criteria set by the Trust. All of the 10 available slots may be reserved up to 24 hours before the specific fishing day.

This approach offers anglers a different opportunity to fish on the Valles Caldera National Preserve while still experiencing the sense of solitude, along with a unique experience on public lands in New Mexico today. The Trust strives to provide a quality and memorable experience.

The morning will begin with a brief safety and educational orientation of the program, along with the issuing of handheld radios, at the Valle Grande Staging Area. Anglers will park either at the staging area or the staff might facilitate some designated road side parking for this program. The anglers will have the opportunity to see wildlife and enjoy the scenery from the Valle Grande. These customers will also get to see a variety of ranch activities such as moving cattle on horseback, fence repairing, or employees collecting information on the resources of the Preserve.

The goal of the Valles Caldera National Preserve is to provide angling opportunities for the public as quality outdoor experiences with emphasis on providing satisfying and memorable experiences in terms of scenery, solitude, wildlife viewing and the challenge of fishing.

How to Apply

To take part in the East Fork Fishing Program, a person will reserve a specific fishing day by phone, online, or via walk-in. Others could take the chance of getting on the East Fork River by driving to the Valle Grande Staging Area and seeing if there are any vacancies or by receiving a one on one experience with a professional guide. This will allow for a different approach from the fishing lottery used for the San Antonio Creek.
