Why use a fishing guide?

Fly fishing on the Valles Caldera National Preserve is potentially a world-class experience. Streams flowing in the scenic valleys are chock-full of brown and rainbow trout ready to snatch well placed flies. Practiced anglers operating in pristine conditions have caught nearly 100 trout in a day. Even novices can meet with significant success, once they have learned the nuances of the waters and the habits of the stream-born occupants.

However, these waters are quite unique. They tend to be crystal clear and flow through open meadows with gentle slopes. Anglers have little cover that is normally found on mountain creeks, such as large rocks, bank-rooted bushes, or overhanging tree limbs. The trout are wary and skittish and can easily be scattered by an approaching angler, increasing the difficulty of drawing a strike.

Additionally, the Preserve’s weather can change rapidly. In spring or fall, early morning can begin at 17F but warm to 65F in the afternoon, greatly altering fish behavior throughout the day. A summer clear sky can grow to a downpour in 40 minutes, obscuring the water for hours and washing down terrestrial bugs that compete with lures for a trout’s attention. Sudden wind storms are common at all times, confounding a angler’s ability to place the fly in the narrow stream.

The unique characteristics of the Preserve’s streams and the perplexing factors of weather can leave even experienced anglers struggling and frustrated.

A permitted fishing guide can mitigate many of these problems, especially for first-timers on the Preserve or less experienced anglers. Preserve-permitted guides have passed a rigorous set of criteria, including demonstrating competence in fishing the Preserve’s streams and understanding the environment. They are especially knowledgeable of the behavior of the fish, including their feeding habits, and are familiar with areas on the stream that have historically been productive. They are well versed in fishing techniques that are productive in different conditions.

Additionally, permitted guides are licensed to transport their customers to some of the most remote sections of the stream, areas where trout are replete. They retain liability and commercial vehicle insurance, maintain a licensed guide business, and are trained about the rules and hazards on the property.

A permitted guide is simply an expert on fishing the Valles Caldera National Preserve and can significantly enhance an angler’s experience. Consider using one for your next fishing trip.
