- Please stay on designated trails only.
- Follow "leave no trace" ethics on the Preserve and pack out any trash you bring. You may dispose of trash at our parking area.
- No open fires, including cooking fires, are allowed on the Preserve and smoking is prohibited except within designated areas. Other seasonal restrictions may be imposed.
- Please do not approach or harass wildlife or livestock.
- Please do not remove or disturb any artifacts, antlers, plant material, or minerals from the Preserve.
- Please arrive on time for scheduled hikes; 15 minutes early is best. Transportation from the parking area is very limited and we cannot transport late arrivals.
- Be aware of those months when lightning is most likely to occur. Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from the area where it is raining.
That's about the distance you can hear thunder. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance. Seek safe shelter immediately.
With common sense, you can greatly increase your safety and the safety of those you are with. At the first clap of thunder, go to a fully enclosed
vehicle and wait 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before you to go back outside. More lightning safety information
- The Valles Caldera Trust is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please hide valuables or leave them at home and lock up your vehicle.
- Trust staff will be patrolling the area frequently to ensure hikers are adhering to the rules.
