Imagine a day on your horse riding through one of New Mexico's most scenic and historic ranches. Riders transporting their own mounts to the Preserve will enjoy the forests and meadows along the Preserve's Banco Bonito trails. Expect to see a wide array of birds, elk and perhaps a bear or coyote along the way. Riders might even glimpse one of the Preserve's two "wild" mares, remnants of the old ranching days on Baca location #1.
On our Banco Bonito trails, horses will not be sharing trails with hikers, mountain bikers or other visitors, so distractions will be at a minimum. The number of horses on the trails will be low to ensure you have a solitary ride, if that is what you seek. Old logging roads allow riders to easily ride in pairs and traverse varying terrains that include some ascents and descents as well as great views. The Preserve accommodates riders seeking different experiences, from pleasant rambling walks to long trots as well as safe galloping terrain. There are four loops available for rides ranging in length from 2.5-12 miles. All trails are through forested terrain and across or around large meadows on established logging roads with easy footing. There are no severe elevation changes on these trails. Elevation of the Preserve is 8,700 feet and higher.
