FAQ for Riders

Q: Can horses be rented on the Preserve?

A: No, the Trust does not offer horse rentals. Only riders who bring their own horses are able to ride the Preserve at present.

Q: Where are these trails like?

A: The trails vary in length; all have good footing and follow flat to gently sloping terrain, following the tracks of old logging roads. Riders travel through forests of pine and aspen and along open meadows. Elevation of the Preserve is 8,700 feet and higher.

Q: Where will I park my vehicle and trailer?

A: The Banco Bonito staging and parking area has been established just inside the gate located at mile Marker 30 off State Highway 4 on the west side of the Preserve.

Q: How large of a trailer rig can you accommodate in the parking area?

A: We can best accommodate a rig that is 50 feet or less in length (truck and trailer combination.)

Q: When will I be able to ride at the Preserve?

A: We will open the Preserve to equestrian participants on most Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays beginning in late May, provided roads are dry. Please check our available dates page for exact dates.

Q: Will I have to make a reservation or can I just show up?

A: The Trust limits the number of riders to provide a quality experience. In addition, parking for horse trailers is limited. Reservations are not required; however, if you wish to guarantee your riding slot, you should make a reservation. You may also sign up at the staging area any day the equestrian trails are operating. Please note individuals with reservations have priority, and walk-ins will be accommodated providing there is room. The Preserve does not presently participate in the Golden Passport program. No exceptions will be made.

Q: Will there be a fee?

A: The fee is $20 per horse.

Q: What facilities will be provided for this activity?

A: Water is available for your horse but no potable water is available on the trail. Parking space is adequate for riders to tie their horses to trailers but no corrals are available. A toilet is provided at the staging area.

Q: How can people who don't own horses participate?

A: We are not currently working with commerical vendors.

Q: Are there any health requirements for bringing horses to the Preserve?

A: The New Mexico State health rules for bringing horses from out-of-state apply; in-state horses are not required to meet any additional health requirements. We recommend that all horses visiting the Preserve be current on all recommended vaccinations, including eastern, western, Venezuelan influenza, tetanus and West Nile Virus. Elevation of the Preserve is 8,700 feet and higher, so be sure your horses are accustomed to high elevations. The Preserve reserves the right to refuse access to any horse we deem unhealthy. Please refer to State's brand inspection regulations for transporting horses in New Mexico.

Q: Why can't I bring my stallion?

A: Many stallions are unruly around mares that could be in estrus. People and horses are at risk of getting hurt, no matter how skilled the horse handler is, and this restriction has everyone's safety in mind.
