Merriam turkey, one of two subspecies found in New Mexico, are noted for their striking plumage, wariness and keen eyesight. Turkey hunting, whether with bow or shotgun, can be a challenge for all skill levels. The Preserve is home to an estimated 400 Merriam Turkeys from April thru December.
The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish has authorized the Trust to begin turkey hunting in the spring of 2007. This will be the second year to hunt turkey on the Preserve. Two 3-day hunts are scheduled for the Spring of 2008. By limiting the number of hunters, the Trust hopes to successfully manage the natural resources and provide a quality hunting experience.
Visit the Planning Your Hunt section to learn how to apply.
This is the second year the Trust has had authorization to offer access for turkey hunting. We are very interested in hearing feedback about this program. What do you think of the pricing? Was it easy to apply for the hunt? Do you have any suggestions for future programs? If you purchase a hunting package or win our lottery, tell us about your experience.
Submit your feedback now or tell us in person at our public board meetings.
