Tips for Hunters
- The Valles Caldera National Preserve is located at an elevation of 8,750 feet and
higher. Come physically prepared to hunt at this altitude. Spring weather can be
warm or cold, so be prepared for variable weather including rain and/or snow.
- At this time, no overnight accommodations, including camping, are available on the
Preserve. The closest area campgrounds are in the nearby Santa Fe National Forest.
Hotels, motels, and bed and breakfast faciliteis are located in Jemez Valley, Los
Alamos, and other near by communities.
- Hunters and thier guest are required to attend an orientation session to hunt on
the Preserve. Be sure to schedule time for this session.
- Outfitters must attend a mandatory outfitter/guide orientation prior to work on
the Preserve. Outfitters must be authorized by the Trust.
- Off-road driving is not allowed on the Preserve.
- You may hunt from horseback. Horses must be fed pelleted feed while on the Preserve
to control the spread of noxious weeds.
- Our staff will be on hand during hunting hours to answer questions.
Area Campgrounds
Currently overnight camping is not available on the Valles Caldera National Preserve.
Nearby campgrounds can accommodate hunters in the fall. For more information, check
on the public lands adjoining the Valles Caldera National Preserve – the Santa
Fe National Forest and Bandelier National Monument.
