Youth Elk Education Program
This is an educational opportunity for non-profit youth groups. The program includes education on elk habitat, behavior, and offers a chance to explore the Preserve on foot while hunting for antlers. The antlers tell us where the elk have been this spring. The antlers gathered will be used to support this program and the management of the Preserve.
Learning about the elk and exploring the Preserve is an experience not to miss. The late snows have kept the elk at lover elevations, but we are still expecting a great time exploring elk habitat on the Preserve.
- Groups must provide a non-profit Federal ID number.
- This is a popular program; groups must apply in advance.
- If more than 16 groups apply, we will conduct a drawing to select participants.
- Each group may send 10 youths and two adults only.
- Each group will have a territory to search that might include walking as much as six miles. Youths should be between the ages of 10 and 18 and be reasonably fit to hike at an altitude of 8500 feet.
- Groups should have access to two, four-wheel drive vehicles that can accommodate their group.
- Each group should be prepared to spend the day hunting for antler sheds.
- Late arrivals and early departures cannot be accommodated.
