Stewardship Action Proposals

Stewardship of the Preserve is guided by the National Environmental Policy Act commonly known by the acronym – NEPA. NEPA applies to all federal agencies and requires each agency to develop its own set of procedures to ensure compliance. The Trust’s procedures for compliance with NEPA were published in July of 2003 and provide a program for the”...comprehensive management of the lands, resources and facilities of the Valles Caldera National Preserve...”

Accurate scientific analysis, expert agency comments, and public scrutiny are essential to implementing NEPA and Trust’s NEPA procedures ensure that information is available to citizens before decisions are made and action is taken. Such information is contained in a Stewardship Register readily available to the public. Most of the contents of our Stewardship Registers are available through this website including:

Proposed Stewardship Actions – This is a preliminary description of an action presented to the Board of Trustees at a public meeting in order to receive authorization to continue planning.
Environmental Documents – Some actions require the preparation of an Environmental Assessment (EA), or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) before a decision can be made or action is taken. Such documents are posted on this website and otherwise made available for public review and comment.
Implementing Decision – After reviewing a proposed stewardship action, public and expert comment, and any associated environmental documents, a decision and the rationale for the decision will be signed, dated and included in the Stewardship Register.
Other documents – documents recording implementing, monitoring, and evaluation may be posted. This section of our website has not been developed. Such information can be provided upon request until will develop a satisfactory system for recording and presenting information in a manner that can be easily accessed and interpreted by a broad audience.
